Painting for a Cause
A few Saturdays ago I had the pleasure to help paint a home at the annual Touchstone Energy® Cooperatives Community Service Project, held in conjunction with the NRECA annual meeting in New Orleans. As one of 100 volunteers from 40 cooperatives across America, we teamed up with the Rebuilding Together New Orleans organization to repair five houses belonging to elderly or disabled homeowners who can’t perform the upkeep on their own.
As NRECA’s Steven Johnson wrote about the event, “it wasn’t just the homeowners who benefited from the stroke of a paintbrush. The annual event has created a sense of camaraderie among co-op participants.” Since 2013, this was my fourth Touchstone community service project. I have made friends from Colorado to Ohio to Florida to Montana. While it is only a one day event, we work hard and talk fast. In most cases, we trade stories about our families, our home cooperatives and quiz each other about something coop-related. Learn more at ect.coop.
