GoSEMO Fiber construction underway in Advance; Co-op 101 set for March 19
By Sean J. Vanslyke
GoSEMO Fiber is now providing broadband services to member-owners in the Miner area. We are completing fiber construction in Advance and working on fiber design and make-ready work in Bloomfield. We are excited about the progress we have made in less than a year. The project started from the ground up in April 2017. It is a big job, plus a $40 million investment. Please see videos and review the news blog for updates at gosemofiber.com or give us a call.
Co-op 101 – Electricity and Fiber
Despite snow and cold temperatures in January, we had several member-owners attend our first Co-op 101 to learn more about the cooperative. If you are curious about SEMO Electric Cooperative’s GoSEMO Fiber project or want to know what it takes to deliver energy or fiber to your home, farm or business, join us for the second Co-op 101 at 6:30 p.m., Monday, March 19 at our Sikeston office.
If you are a SEMO Electric member-owner and would like to hold a strand of fiber, touch a fuse barrel or see our inventory barcoding system in action, email Marla at [email protected] or call 800-813-5230 to reserve a seat. We will discuss the cooperative business model; provide insights about SEMO Electric and GoSEMO Fiber; and provide a tour of the facility. Plus, you can experience our Gigabit Fiber Internet.
Federal Communications Commission
In seeking federal infrastructure funding for SEMO Electric’s GoSEMO Fiber project, we traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with the Federal Communications Commission’s Chairman Ajit Pai and Staff to discuss the Connect America Fund Phase II, which could provide up to $650 million over 10 years for broadband services for rural Missouri. In addition, we held meetings with Senator Roy Blunt, Senator Claire McCaskill and Congressman Jason Smith’s offices to request their continued support of broadband funding.
CAF-II is part of the Commission’s reform and modernization of its universal service support programs. CAF-II will use competitive bidding to efficiently support the deployment of networks providing both voice and broadband service, thereby expanding broadband availability to millions more unserved Americans – including us in southeast Missouri. If successful in the auction, it could speed up deployment of GoSEMO Fiber.
If it is a good business decision for the cooperative, we plan to participate in the auction, which is planned for July 2018. We will need to read the fine print so as to understand stated obligations in accepting federal funding. Regardless, we appreciate local, state and federal elected officials’ focus on helping us bring broadband to southeast Missouri.
Save the Date
SEMO Electric’s Annual Membership Meeting is set for Monday, May 14, 2018, at the Miner Convention Center. We will open the doors at 5 p.m. for snacks and live music. The business meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Please mark your calendar.
Book of the Month
“We all make mistakes We all make bad choices. We all fall short. If we believe that’s who we are, we won’t want to get out of bed. We shouldn’t buy into that either. Both lines – of success and of failure – are extremes. We’re neither as good nor as bad as they might indicate. The essence of self-leadership is doing the right thing even when you don’t want to do it, and not doing the wrong thing even when you do want to do it. When you determine your values, you’ve already decided what you will and won’t do. Then when you face a difficult moment, your job is to follow through on the decision you’ve made.” John C. Maxwell – Developing the Leader Within You 2.0
