For several years, James R. Mayhew and I have been virtual friends, connecting through messages and video calls. Our relationship started during COVID-19, but on Monday, we finally met in person for the first time. As we talked, one theme stood out—the power of asking questions.

We discussed leadership, teamwork, and communication, but the simplest and most effective way to build strong relationships remains the same: be curious. Ask about experiences, challenges, and perspectives. Listen to understand, not just to respond.

Whether you’re leading a team, strengthening friendships, or just meeting someone new, the best way to connect is by asking questions—and truly listening to the answers.
