Welcome home, Jared!
Team SEMO’s Jared Kelley recently joined 10 other representatives from Missouri’s electric cooperatives, including two linemen from Black River Electric Cooperative in Fredericktown, on a Missouri on a Mission (Missouri Electric Cooperatives) trip to the hurricane-ravaged island of Jamaica—a mission that looked very different from most storm responses.
The group traveled to assist with long-term recovery following Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall near the Black River area on October 28, 2025, leaving widespread damage. Months after the storm, communities were still working to restore critical electric infrastructure. This trip wasn’t about immediate response—it was about rebuilding and helping neighbors regain reliability and normalcy.
For Jared, this mission carried added meaning—it marked the third time he has volunteered for an international trip, continuing his commitment to service well beyond SEMO Electric’s service territory.
Unlike many international trips, there were no tools or equipment waiting on site. Each lineman carried heavy bags of tools through customs, bringing everything needed to rebuild lines safely and correctly. It was a reminder that service sometimes starts long before the first pole is climbed.
Work began with an extensive safety orientation led by their hosts at Jamaica Public Service Company, reinforcing a shared truth across borders: no matter where the work is done, safety always comes first.
The days were long, the conditions challenging, and the experience unforgettable. Meals often included chicken feet, prepared in different ways and served with rice—a local staple that became part of the shared cultural experience.
The mission was part of the international partnership launched by NRECA in collaboration with USAID. NRECA’s International Program began in 1962 with a simple goal—bringing electric cooperative expertise to communities around the world.
Thank you Jim McCarty for the images and team support. We know you did more than document the journey!
