The Friday Feature w/Sean: Words Leave Scars

Meet Ted. “What song would you like us to sing?” He smiled and quietly replied, “It doesn’t matter. I don’t sing.” His answer didn’t surprise me. I just never knew why. ✅ Have you ever thought about how long your words can live? Welcome to Week 328 of The Friday Feature.

Tomorrow, America celebrates its 250th birthday. It’s amazing to think that many of us have lived through nearly one-fifth of our nation’s history. The words in the Declaration of Independence changed a nation. The words we speak every day may never change a nation, but they can absolutely change a person.

Every Saturday morning, my friend Ted McDaniel sends me the same text: “Good morning. Happy Saturday.” It’s simple, but every week it reminds me that someone is thinking about me.

Recently, someone at church asked Ted, “What song would you like us to sing?” He smiled and quietly replied, “It doesn’t matter. I don’t sing.” His answer didn’t surprise me. For years, we’ve stood behind Ted in church, and I’d noticed he never sang. I just never knew why.

Later, I asked him. Ted told me that when he about 8 years old, someone told him he couldn’t sing. So, he stopped. Not for a few weeks. Not for a few years. For more than 70 years.

Think about that. One sentence spoken to a 8-year-old boy shaped the next seven decades of his life.

How many people are carrying words like that today? Maybe it was a parent. A teacher. A coach. A boss. Someone who said, “You’re not good enough.” “You’ll never make it.” “You can’t do that.”

Those words can leave scars. But so can words of encouragement.

Every Saturday, Ted reminds me of that with a simple text: “Good morning. Happy Saturday.” The irony isn’t lost on me. A man whose voice was silenced by someone’s words now uses his words to encourage others. I’ve said things I wish I could take back. And I’ve had words spoken to me that I wish I’d never heard. Most of us have.

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, let’s remember that one of the greatest freedoms we have is choosing the words we speak. Choose words that give hope. Choose words that build confidence. Choose words that remind people they matter. Because the words you speak today may become someone else’s inner voice tomorrow.

Thanks for watching and sharing Week 328 of The Friday Feature. Keep Pushing Forward.
