The Friday Feature w/Sean: The Best Advice in Five Words

Some of the best advice I’ve ever received came in just five words. Welcome to Week #292 of The Friday Feature. Just before I stepped on stage to speak to bus drivers, custodians, cooks, coaches, teachers, and administrators for the first time as school board president, Roger stopped me.

He smiled and said five words I’ll never forget: “Brevity is your best friend.”

I took his advice and summed up my speech to this: “You matter to every student. Be somebody who cares.”

That was nearly 25 years ago. Since we moved, I haven’t seen Roger in a long time but his advice still echoes in my mind.

And fittingly, Roger just celebrated 65 years of marriage with his wife Linda. ❤️ Maybe that’s the secret to lasting love, too: say less, mean more, and show you care.
